Gairo- A ghost town

Gairo- A ghost town

Today I will take you to Gairo Vecchio, a ghost town in the mid-east of Sardinia. The town was abandoned in the fifties after heavy raining which made the ground insecure. Imagine to visit a entire village that’s been abandoned like this, not very long ago, and not bombed in a war or destroyed by an earthquake… You can still read the names of the streets, the sign outside the library…. look into homes where you still find objects that wasn’t valuable enough to take with you… a really strange feeling…
But even if we were all alone on our visit you can see the presence of people, New Gairo lies nearby, and some still grow their old gardens and keep animals in Old Gairo, even though it’s on their own risk.

An old door where you can still see the letters DDT from when they sprayed the houses for malaria after the war made me think of this reportage in these days of sickness.
